Dr Shukri

I was told by my friend Che Harun Che Chat that Dr Shukri died last Wednesday. The news was confirmed by another sms by Yun on the same day of the details in preparing the jenazah.

Dr Shukri seems bery serious but actually could be the funiest person. If a joke is all about timing, then he has perfected it. His one liners are hilarious.

But he is also intelligent, thus his Dr title. It is sad that he has left us since the last time we communicate is via sms when he invited me for a crit. Unfortunately, I could not make it as there was another sudden commitment to be attended.

Bless his soul.

Yam Tuan

We have a new Yam Tuan Negri Sembilan yesterday 29th December 2008, on the first day of 1430 Hijrah.

Tuanku Mukhriz is the nephew of the Tuanku Jaafar and could have been the Yam Tuan 41 years ago had it not been for his age, 19 only at that time.

Also it is interesting to note the fllowings, based on an article by Arman Ahmad. (source http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Monday/National/2438810/index.pda)

The state, which had been receiving immigrants from Sumatra for hundreds of years, is ruled by a unique form of government.

Before it became known as Negri Sembilan, the area was ruled by the Sultan of Malacca. After Malacca was defeated by the Portuguese, it was ruled by the Johor sultanate.

By 1760, however, Johor, which was having trouble from the Dutch, decided to allow the state to find a raja or sultan from Minangkabau in Sumatra.

Between 1760 and 1770, a council of leaders known as the datuk-datuk penghulu luak (the predecessor of the datuk datuk undang today) left for Pagar Ruyong in Minangkabau in search of a leader.

The Raja of Pagar Ruyong -- who was believed to be a descendant of Alexander The Great, gave them a leader in the form of his son, Raja Mahmud. Raja Mahmud later became known as Raja Melewar when he came to Negri Sembilan.

When Raja Melewar died in 1795, instead of selecting his son as their new leader, the same council of leaders once again set out on a journey to their ancestral land.

This time, the Raja of Pagar Ruyong gave another one of his sons -- Raja Hitam as their new Yam Tuan. Raja Hitam married Raja Melewar's daughter, Tengku Aishah, but they had no children. He died in 1808.

Once again, the leaders of Negri Sembilan went to Minangkabau in search of someone to replace their leader.

The Raja of Pagar Ruyong at that time sent his son, Raja Lenggang. He wedded Raja Hitam's second daughter, Tengku Ngah, from another marriage. They had two sons -- Tengku Radin and Tengku Imam. Before he died in 1824, Raja Lenggang said it was his wish that Tengku Radin be made the Yam Tuan.

This time, the datuk datuk undang did not embark on a trip to meet the Raja of Pagar Ruyong.
Thus, for the first time in its history, Negri Sembilan had a hereditary leader.

Yam Tuan Radin ruled for 30 years before he died. Then, his brother, Yang di-Pertuan Imam, ruled for eight years. When he died, Negri Sembilan was plunged into uncertainty when Yam Tuan Radin's son, Tengku Antah, and Yang di-Pertuan Imam's son, Tengku Ahmad Tunggal, scrambled for the throne.

The council did not want to accept Tengku Ahmad Tunggal, so Tengku Antah became ruler until 1888. His son, Tuanku Muhammad, later took over until his death in 1933.

Tuanku Muhammad's son, Tuanku Abdul Rahman, took over in 1960. The latter's son, Tuanku Munawir, ascended the throne in 1960 and ruled until 1967.

When Tuanku Munawir died, his brother, Tuanku Ja'afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman, became the ruler of Negri Sembilan. -- Information from Warisan Diraja Negri Sembilan Darul Khusus

Year End

The New year 2009 is around the corner and we are facing the same problem again.

Yes, it is the time to raise money for the kids tuition, school attire, books, my own professional affiliation subscription fees and many others.

I guess this is normal to all parents. If I am affected by all these, I wonder how the families from the lower income group manage their finances.

Landslides

Landslides happened in Melawati reveal a few items about human nature.
These are:
  1. Malaysians act only after a tragedy occurs, faster if the victims are rich.
  2. Many Acts and Regulations will be passed later but to no enforcement.
  3. We have short term memory, we will soon forget about the whole issue in say three months time.
  4. Politicians take the opportunity in this tragedy to promote themselves.
  5. Some of the victims are unappreciating lots.
  6. Some of those who helps come with the intention to loot
  7. Many will take this example to further enforce their reasoning why development should not be done elsewhere at slopes.
The human nature have the tendency to justify any tragedy that happens. If a girl gets raped, we will assume that her skimpy clothes have something to do with it and therefore she deserves it. An accident happens because the driver has three outstanding summonses. War and genocide happens in Bosnia because the people there does not adhere to the right Muslim practices.

The same thing is happening in Bukit Antarabangsa. These victims must have done something wrong that they are being punished this way, that is what we say for the soul to handle such complex issues.

Nevertheless, some other people harp on this very tragedy to justify their action. No development is to be done on slopes, they say. We do not want the same thing happens to Bukit antarabangsa happens to us. Funny thing is the slopes has been used in Mont Kiara, Pantai Dalam, Fraser Hills and the rest for many years yet the development there are still steady. Yet in Bukit Antarabangsa, the tragedy happened twice in the last 17 years.

The engineers can do wonders but it is up to us to ensure that the condition remain as it is. Unscrupulous developments and lack of proper maintenence is the cause of these problems. At least tthet is what I think.

Daus tunang at Muar

It was Saturday 3rd December 2008.

My last brother in law is finally getting closer to get married. He shall be the last one in my wife's family to get hitched.

Which brings to another issue, my niece also wants to get married or at least to get engaged as well.

Unfortunately, the mother did not approve giving the reason that she has to complete her studies first before thinking of anything else.

My experience tells me that getting in love could be a good thing. Break up is the worst. If you have found some body that you love, get married. Enjoy life together. We welcome any boy or girl who wants to spends his or life with our daughters or sons.

But, once you got married, you have to assume responsibility. That is all that we as parents asked for.
